Art Meets Early Literacy: Build Animal Alphabet Cards Your Toddler Will Adore

One of the first projects I did with my son when I became a stay-at-home mom was create his very own alphabet cards.

It was the first lesson series I ever made and I wanted to share it with you for free as a glimpse into what my work is all about: slowing down, connecting with your child, and learning through play.

You’ll get my complete Artsy Animal Alphabet Guide, with full lesson plans & photo guides for every letter so you can make your very own custom set of cards at home.

Here’s a look at the set of custom cards my son and I made together:

Why Make Your Own Alphabet Cards

As an early childhood educator, I used alphabet cards every day. But I wanted something more meaningful… something made together.

In a world full of screens and quick wins, slowing down to create your own alphabet set changes everything. It invites you and your child to learn through process, not product.

Here’s why it matters:

  • It builds connection. As you draw, paint, and glue together, every letter becomes a memory — “Remember when we painted the messy monkey?”
  • It turns learning into play. When your child helps make the animal their own, the alphabet becomes alive and personal.
  • It sparks pride and ownership. Seeing their own art displayed gives your child confidence — “I made that!”
  • It nurtures creativity and language. Talking about sounds while you create (“B is for Bear — what sound does B make?”) naturally connects art with words and meaning.

🧺 What You’ll Need

You don’t need fancy materials — here’s what we used for all 26 animals:

  • Cardstock & Scrap Paper
  • Crayons, markers, or paints
  • Glue sticks, white glue, & tape
  • Cotton balls
  • Paper Plates
  • Scissors
  • Forks, toothpicks, dry noodles & salt for sensory details
  • Googly eyes (optional)

Keep it simple. Sketch an animal outline or let your toddler take the lead, there’s no wrong way. Some families do one letter a day; others make a few at a time.

The goal isn’t perfection, it’s presence.

When you’re done, clip them on a string, frame your favorites, or display them all together for future reference. (Just like you would do in a classroom!) Each card becomes a keepsake of the moments you created together.

Final Thoughts

Early literacy doesn’t begin with flashcards, it begins with connection. When learning happens through creativity and care, it becomes joyful and lasting.

So grab your art supplies, clear a little space on the table, and start your alphabet adventure one letter at a time. You’ll create more than just learning tools — you’ll build memories, laughter, and the beginning of your child’s lifelong love for learning.

Until Next Time ❤️
