Our Favorite Buys for Never-ending Toddler Fun: Open Ended, Educational, & Meaningful

Toddlers make the holidays feel magical, but choosing the right gifts can feel overwhelming with so many options out there. That’s why I’m sharing the items that have truly stood the test of time in our home; The toys my toddler comes back to again and again. From imaginative play couches to puzzles or play-kitchen staples that support real learning, these gifts go beyond entertainment. They’re the ones that create memories, spark creativity, and make this Christmas one your toddler will remember.

Our Favorite Open-Ended Toys/Items:

Open-ended toys are great choices for toddlers because they invite creativity, problem-solving, and independent play. They can grow with your child, and you can watch as they develop new and intriguing ways to play with that same item. These are some of our favorites that I have watched our toddler play with for over a year, each time doing something a bit different with them!

Convertible Play Couch/Fort

No matter what brand you purchase (Nugget Couch, Yourigami, FoamOh, etc.) these couches offer a variety of play for your toddler. It can go from a climbing structure, to a reading nook, or maybe even a lemonade stand! It’s also safe for tumbles, which is nice for those little climbers šŸ‘¶

Building Blocks

I’m partial to Megablocks, as they are lightweight and easy to store. But any sort of blocks that allow your child to dream up new and creative builds is a win!

Magnetic Tiles

Very similar to the last one, but with a new-age twist. Magnetic tiles have been a hit in the STEM & Montessori communities, as well as in many standard homes across America! The building and creating opportunities are endless. We have made everything from board games to air hockey to rocket ships!

Water Table

Although you may live in an area that’s not currently compatible with a water table, it’s too great of a buy to not mention. It encourages outside play, new and creative water uses, and the creative set ups I have seen online would keep any toddler engaged!

Our Favorite Educational Toys/Items:

When kids hear the words “educational toys” they immediately run in the other direction. And although I agree that the title doesn’t sound as fun as “Batman Hotwheels track,” there are some awesome toys in this list that my son will choose to play with any day! All the while, they have promoted new skills and learning opportunities ✨

Musical Instruments

Musical instruments are some of the most transformative toys in our house. We went from simple egg shakers, to pianos, and now guitars. It helps build an early sense of cause & effect and new language pathways! Plus, you get to listen to funky beats all day šŸŽ¶

Peg Puzzles

These are a simple toy that helped develop my sons fine motor skills, as well as problem solving skills! Depending on the puzzle, you can also incorporate color matching, counting, and size comparison!

Flashcards

Now hear me out! I know this sounds lame, but not all flashcards are created equal. This huge set we got has little challenges on the back of each card, so after developing some vocabulary, you get to play a minigame!

Busy Boards

This was not only an awesome purchase for quiet independent play, but also an awesome tool for building fine motor skills! These often have different small skills woven in, such as weaving, buttoning, Velcro-sticking and more!

Our Favorite Meaningful Toys/Items:

This can mean a whole slew of things to a bunch of different people, so let me better explain what I mean when I say “meaningful.” Meaningful toys/items are ones that have helped my son build real life skills or connections with others. These are the items that we will look back on and think… “that’s where he learned to do ____!” With these items, you’ll see your child’s independence blossom 🌼

Play Kitchen with Play Food

This was our big purchase last year for Christmas, and boy has it been a huge hit! It really set in stone the skills we were teaching him in the kitchen, as he mimicked them on his own beautifully. He still enjoys cooking us meals with his pretend food, and references the food we make all the time. A staple in our house for sure!

Kitchen Stool

Speaking of kitchen skills, this has been a game changer in our ability to have a toddler sous chef. He is at perfect counter height, while being stabilized and supported. We have made countless memories together in the kitchen because of this stool. I wrote a bunch more about it in my Baking with a Toddler blog!

Sensory Table

In our homeschooling journey, there is no item that has gotten more use than our sensory table. It is used daily for art, writing practice, sensory bins of varying materials, science experiments and more. If you’re looking for some sensory bin items to add to this gift, I gave a few ideas in my Sensory Bins blog post!

Radio Flyer Trike

This trike has allowed our family to go on so many adventures together. Your toddler can feel independent in their pedaling skills, while parents can ensure safety with the steering bar. My son asks to go on a bike ride more than anything now, and the journeys we have been on together are some of my favorite memories!

Final Thoughts

The giving season can be overwhelming, and finding the perfect gifts for your little ones is an added stress for sure. Although I recommend these products wholeheartedly, an expensive present isn’t what matters most this season. Whatever you have under your tree this year, I hope it brings joy and warm memories for your family.

I hope you found this list helpful, and I would love to hear all about the memories you make with them on my Instagram! Tag me @ReasHomegrown so I can show ya some love šŸ˜
