Montessori Meets Waldorf: Creating a Learning Space for Toddlers at Home
For ages, our dining room sat untouched. It was a quiet, unused space collecting more dust than memories. If you have an unused room (or even just a corner) that’s begging for a purpose, what if it could become a space designed for your child’s curiosity, creativity, and independence?
That’s exactly what we decided to do; transform our unused dining room into a Montessori-meets-Waldorf learning space for our toddler. A place to imagine, explore, and grow, right at home.

Montessori Meets Waldorf — What That Really Means
Having worked in a Montessori school for a few years, I saw firsthand how a thoughtfully designed environment encourages independence. Montessori spaces focus on accessibility, child-sized furniture, and purposeful play. All things that nurture confidence.
Key Montessori-inspired elements to include:
- Child-sized tables and chairs (so little ones can sit and work independently)
- Accessible bookshelves for easy self-selection
- Clearly defined areas for different activities: reading, math, crafts
- Simple, neutral color palette to reduce overstimulation
But I also fell in love with Waldorf design while researching. It adds warmth, imagination, and nature-inspired beauty to the structure of Montessori. Waldorf elements include:
- Natural textures (wood, linen, cotton, wool)
- Soft, warm lighting
- Open-ended play materials
- Art, plants, and handmade touches that spark wonder
Combining the two creates a space that’s not just functional, it’s magical.

Shopping for a Child-Led Learning Space
Once you’ve defined your vision, it’s time for the fun part: finding furniture that grows with your child.
It was going to be in the center of the room so we wanted to get this one right! Understanding the importance of sensory play we opted for a sensory table that features two removable tub inserts (we chose green shallow ones) that can be swapped for any activity – sensory bins, art projects, or water play. Its neutral wood tone perfectly fits that Montessori-Waldorf vibe.
We got ours from IKEA but I’ve linked a similar set from Amazon. They’re adjustable and versatile to be a: deep chair, shallow toddler seat, or even a mini table.
I’ve written about some of my favorite sensory setups we use every day using this table and chair combo!
We also brought in a cozy neutral rug, warm lighting, and a few natural textures to balance the space including a hand painted bug themed mural! The goal was to make it feel cohesive with the rest of our home, not like someone dropped a preschool into our kitchen.
Bringing the Vision to Life (With Help From Our Son)
Now came the fun (and slightly chaotic) part, assembly and decorating!
We invited our son to help set up and decorate. He was an outstanding helper, only after he told me, “No, no, no Mama, draw on paper!” when I started the mural. He added his favorite books, helped choose pillows, and proudly declared where each toy belonged. The result was a space that felt his.
Some of our favorite finishing touches:
- Tiny Land Play Kitchen — endless pretend play opportunities
- Front-Facing Bookshelf — keeps books visible and inviting
- Cool Kids Read Books Pillow Cover — adds a pop of color and personality (with a great message!)
- Bean Bag Cover — perfect for a reading nook or quiet time corner, and allows for easy washing
- Costume Bin — A designated space that’s welcoming to all sorts of dress-up adventures
I write more about my favorite open-ended, educational, and meaningful toddler buys here if you’re interested! Some of these would make great additions to your playroom / learning area!

Final Thoughts
You don’t need a Pinterest-perfect setup to make learning meaningful. Whether it’s a full room or a cozy corner, what matters most is connection and intention.
The key is to create a space where your child can explore, lead, and grow at their own pace. What’s one corner of your home that could become your child’s space to learn, imagine, and grow?
❤️ Until next time
