5 Fall Books That Will Make Your Next Story Time Magical

There’s something extra cozy about curling up with your little one and a good book when the air turns crisp and the pumpkins appear. These five Fall books bring that magic to story time; Full of gentle spooks, autumn colors, and characters your toddler will adore.

This Fall has been one of discovery with my toddler. We have found his communication growing like crazy, his understanding of things developing faster than we thought, and he is loving the magic that comes along with all things ✨ F A L L ✨ (especially the Halloween inflatables in everyone’s yard :P) So, naturally, we have been picking up a lot more books to keep all that wonder and excitement growing this season, and here are a few of our favorites so far!

1. An Introduction to Autumn:

The Leaf Thief is a charming story following a squirrel discovering their love for Autumn. As it talks about the beauty of the changing leaves and crisper air, it takes a funny twist into a mystery of the missing leaf!

It covers topics of seasonal change, adapting to change, teamwork & friendship. All the while, your reader is enamored with the beautiful illustrations and funny characters.

This is one I loved reading as a teacher, and always recommend to others as the seasons change! You can check it out here:

2. Let’s Get Growing this Fall:

From Seed to Pumpkin is a great science-focused read for your growing gardeners this fall. It teaches all about how we plant seeds during certain times of year, what pumpkins need to grow, and how we can see them get bigger and change color. It’s a wonderful first step into the biology of pumpkin growing!

My son thought the illustrations in this one were super neat, and although the language is very informative, it’s not too heavy for a younger reader’s story time. Plus, we got to connect the images we saw in the book to the things we saw on our recent trip to the pumpkin patch!

3. For Those Who Believe:

Leo is a ghost, and his whole life get’s flipped upside-down when he has to move from his house. On his new adventure though, he meets Jane, someone who can see him. It’s a beautiful story of friendship in new places and teaches the lesson of not judging others who are different from us.

This is another one I loved reading to my class, so when I saw it was available at the library I knew I had to check it out for my son. He adores Leo and loves when he catches the bad guy (trying not to spoil the ending, sorry :P).

A very cute read and a fun take on a ghost story! Here’s a link to check it out:

4. For Those Who Don’t:

A Tale of Two Beasts is one of my favorite ways to introduce perspective. It’s something that a lot of younger kiddos struggle to understand, but this fun story does it in a way that will definitely have your kid laughing while considering who is in the right…

This one isn’t inherently fall-themed, although the scenery and imagery it describes definitely leans into the autumn category. Plus, it’s like reading two different stories in one, and who doesn’t love sneaking in an extra read aloud!

This was another classroom favorite, and I am excited to debate my son on whose perspective is the correct one. It’s always interesting to see what they say! If you want to start that with your little one, here’s a link:

5. Our Halloween Fav:

If my son knew I was writing a “fall themed books” list without including The Good, The Bad & The Spooky, I think he would ask to be adopted.

It’s a hilarious and apparently very quotable story all about the pressures we place on ourselves, and the fun we miss out on when we do that. The Bad Seed character realizes what Halloween is truly about and learns a lot of important lessons along the way.

It will also lead to a lot of funny reenactments, such as “ATTENTION EVERYBODY, SQUIRRELS!” while standing on your coffee table… sigh. But it will also lead to meaningful conversations about taking a deep breath, and thinking about what really matters.
