5 Engaging Dinosaur Activities for Preschool and Kindergarten

When we took our son to Dinos Alive for his birthday, we expected excitement, maybe a few frightened faces, and a lot of stomping around. What surprised us? That it would spark weeks of learning, exploring, and pretending to be paleontologists.

We knew we had to keep that curiosity going, so I created a 5-part Dinosaur Explorer Activity Bundle (more on that below!). Here’s how one unforgettable birthday trip became the launchpad for a dino-packed learning journey: fossils, habitats, and all!

🦕 A Dino-Lover’s Dream Come True

Our son is a dinosaur lover to the max, dinosaur toys, dino-themed nursery, even t-shirts with dinosaurs riding motorcycles (boy moms, we stand united). So when we saw that an immersive dinosaur exhibit was coming to town right around his birthday, we had to jump on the opportunity.

He was blown away by the life-sized animated dinosaurs! His favorite? The Pachycephalosauruses butting their helmet-heads together adding his own “BONK!” sound effects, of course.

We read the displays together and translated the heavy science into toddler-friendly language. He liked guessing whether dinos “eat meat” or “eat plants” and proudly showed his stuffed pterodactyl (Pterry) to a Quetzalcoatlus – “Look, it’s mama!”

When this was all said and done, we used that excitement to jump into these Jurassic activities:

Here’s what our dinosaur-packed week looked like:

1. Frozen Dinosaur Rescue

Invite your child to become a mini-paleontologist on a mission to free dinosaurs trapped in ice! Our son was ready to jump into this activity, especially given the fact that we were doing this in the heat of summer 😛

Here’s what I used:

How to Play:
Freeze dinosaurs in molds overnight. Set them in a tub with tools and a bit of water. Encourage your explorer to chip away and observe the changes.

Learning Focus: Understanding states of matter, sensory exploration, and fine motor skills, all while saving those dinos!

💡 Parent Tip: Add a saltwater spray to spark a mini science experiment in melting speed!

2. Fossil Extraction Extravaganza

Transform your sensory bin into a dino dig site, where counting meets science. I made sure to count how many I had beforehand so he could put the mixed-up dinosaur puzzle back together without a bone going missing!

You’ll Need:

How to Play:
Hide the bones in the sand and invite your little paleontologist to uncover them carefully. Count each fossil as it’s found, and discuss what fossils teach us about the past.

3. Mini Jurassic Habitat in a Jar

Bring the prehistoric world to life, one jar at a time. We turned our evening walks into this interactive dino-science lesson! It was easily his favorite of the 5, and he loved adding things to his little dinosaurs “house.”

You’ll Need:

How to Play:
Talk about what dinosaurs’ habitats might have looked like long ago, then head outside to collect natural materials. Build your own “mini habitat” for your dinosaur and discuss how some elements are needed for survival, just like humans!

Learning Focus:
Understanding ecosystems, reasoning, and comparing animal vs. human needs.

4. Salt Dough Fossil Impressions

Mix, measure, and press to create fossil imprints that last. This took our son’s love for baking, and threw in his love for dinosaurs in the perfect way! Now we have a keepsake on our shelf that he references frequently… “Look mama! Rawrs!”

You’ll Need:

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 cup salt
  • 1 cup water
  • Mixing bowl
  • Plastic dinos and leaves

How to Play:
Combine ingredients until a soft dough forms. Flatten it and press items to create impressions. Bake at 200°F for 2 hours or air-dry for a day.

5. Create-Your-Own Dino Mask

End your dinosaur week with a creative keepsake that ties it all together. Not only will it remind you of your Jurassic learning adventures, but you will also invite a new world of imaginative play into your house! We frequently have a masked dinosaur stomping around now 😛

You’ll Need:

  • Paper plates
  • Scissors
  • Hole punch
  • Ribbon or string
  • Markers
  • Optional: Feathers! (Many dinosaurs had feathers)

How to Play:
Cut your plate into a dino-shape (I used a triceratops and attached a template in the activity bundle). Cut out eye holes and hole punch two spots for ribbon. Encourage creative freedom with colors and more, then tie on the ribbon and let your little dino ROAR!

Tying them All Together With a Guide

To make all the activities feel like one big adventure, I created a trifold brochure for your little one to take on their journeys! As we completed each activity, we checked it off in the Mission Tracker.

Guided by Leif the Worm, kids get to explore, dig, and create while building key early learning skills. These simple setups blend science, sensory play, and imagination and each one connects directly to early childhood learning standards.

If this is sounding like something you and your dino-obsessed kid would enjoy, you can check out the full resource (and everything else included) below:

What’s Included

  • 5 themed mission instructions: Ice Rescue, Fossil Dig, Habitat in a Jar, Salt Dough Fossils, Create-Your-Own Mask
  • Parent guide with materials, learning goals, and scripts
  • Child-facing Leif guide for
    connection-rich exploration
  • Vocabulary prompts and science concepts aligned with CA NGSS standards

Final Thoughts

These activities weren’t just fun, they built curiosity, confidence, and connection. Because everything was rooted in his natural excitement, learning felt effortless.

If your little learner loves dinosaurs, the Dino Explorer Activity Bundle is the perfect adventure to start. With Leif the Worm as their guide, your child will roar through a week of discovery — and maybe teach you a thing or two about fossils along the way!

❤️ Until next time
